Twitter faces investigations from Ireland and Europe regarding user data

NewAITechnology - After a few months ago Facebook faced problems related to user data leakage, now it's Twitter's turn to face an investigation from the data protection commission team in Ireland. As is known that the experience that has happened to Facebook has become a separate learning for data protection commission teams in Ireland and in Europe. So that this year the government has increased supervision of several large technology and social networking companies that have been widely used by the public.

On Thursday, the team formed by the Irish government, the Irish Data Supervisory Commission officially investigated suspicions in the practice of data disclosure by Twitter. This formed commission investigated how much data the Twitter party had collected when users clicked "t.co" abbreviated as twitter. The "t.co" link that is abbreviated automatically changes to a tweet posted by its users. This is very understandable considering Twitter limits the characters used in each tweet to its users.

British researcher from London Colledge University, Michael Viale explicitly asked the Twitter to submit data that they had collected about him with the "t.co" link so he could learn it. However, it is unfortunate that the government of Michael Viale was flatly rejected by Twitter. They point out by mentioning a number of efforts they will do. Although in theory Michael Viale has the right to request this data based on the right to data under the new European General Data Protection Act. Viale suspected that the twitter had collected user data when its users click "t.co".

Viale complained about this problem to the Irish DPC since the European Headquarters in London was transferred to Dublin, Ireland. The team formed to investigate whether Twitter has violated its obligations under GDPR regulations. In the regulation, which was only passed in May, requires large technology companies to be more transparent in the use of customer data and require more information to their customers.

Like Facebook, Twitter and Airbnb are required to renew the Terms of Service that they make to comply with GDPR regulations. For example, Airbnb is asked to include details of costs that have been hidden in rental prices for transparency. Lately the European Union has shown their displeasure with the two largest social media platforms in the world, Facebook and Twitter, because they have not renewed their service requirements to comply with GDPR. Both social media platforms will be threatened with sanctions if until the end of this year they do not renew their terms of service.

Twitter is still somewhat luckier than Facebook which has been in the spotlight in the 2018 period, with issues related to Cambridge Analytica and recent data breaches. Not without problems, considering this data was allegedly used for political purposes in the US presidential election yesterday. As a result, stock prices plummeted along with spam cleaning and a decrease in the number of monthly active users.
